Philoptochos

The Ladies Philoptochos Society is a national charitable organization that was established in 1931. The ministry’s name means ‘Friends of the Poor’. There are approximately 500 chapters nationwide. We work to aid the poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, the imprisoned, the widowed, the handicapped and the victims of disasters. Philoptochos also works to preserve and perpetuate Orthodox Christian concepts in the family through our faith, customs and traditions.

The St. Basil Philoptochos chapter is small but mighty! We meet on the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 pm in the church hall. During our ‘baking seasons’ we meet on Wednesday nights at 5:30. Watch the church bulletin for our baking schedule for our Easter Yiayia’s Kouzina pre-order sale and for our festival cooking. We have a lot of fun when we get together to bake/cook, and all are welcome. We enjoy having the men in our parish join us for baking also and we are very happy to teach anybody that is willing to work!

One of the Diocese events that we are involved with is the Feed the Hungry program. This is an annual event where each of the parishes involved, is assigned a specific date to provide a meal, serving of the meal and providing clothing to the needy. We also serve the community by visiting the Greek American Rehabilitation and Nursing Home once a year (usually in the summer) to help the residents celebrate birthdays and feast days for our assigned month. Our parish events include our pre-order bake sale for Easter, baking for our festival, our parish feast day receptions, Loukamathes Sundays, coat drive, rummage sale, Easter Lamb Raffle, Palm Sunday Luncheon, Sunday Fellowship Hour and much much more.

Our officers are:  Kathy Walstrom   President

                  Kathy Michas   Vice-President

                  Helene Frankos  Recording Secretary

                  Jeanne Katsoulis   Corresponding Secretary

                  Cynthia Schroeder  Treasurer

                  Marian Papas   Advisor/Past President

Philoptochos needs your time and talents. We are always open to new ideas and can use your help. Women of the Greek Orthodox faith, 18 years of age or older are eligible for membership. You do not need to speak Greek or be of Greek descent to join. Our membership dues are $25.00. Your financial support is important to our ability in fulfilling our financial responsibilities to our many Archdiocesan contributions. If you can’t make it to our meetings you can still join us for our many other endeavors! You can count on us to find a place for your talent and enthusiasm, and it’s a great way for new parishioners to get to know a lot of other church members.
